You Have a Redeemer

Do you know what FOMO is? It's a term coined in the last decade or so that stands for "fear of missing out." It's been predominantly associated with the use of social media as people can legitimately feel anxiety of having missed out on an exciting event due to seeing social media posts they were not a part of. The fear of missing out can be real for a lot of people. A common fear among some young people is being picked last for sports team. People may even feel anxiety about being left out in group settings. I think a big part of FOMO is the fear of being left out. We fear being left out/behind; friendships strengthening without us; people moving on without us; we fear that our absence might become an acceptable norm; we fear that we might not be missed. But no matter how much FOMO we may experience our measure of worth and inclusion is determined by the value of our life. And our life is so valuable that the very Son of God laid down His life so that we might not be left out of His Kingdom.

12 Praise be to the Lord,
who this day has not left you
without a guardian-redeemer.

Ruth 4:14 (NIV)

In the time of Israel, legacies and inheritance were passed down to male descendants. Should a family be left without descendants it was the responsibility of the closest relative to redeem that family's inheritance and ensure their name was not forgotten. When Ruth was redeemed by Boaz the entire lineage of Naomi and Elimelech was saved. As such the people of the town rejoiced that god had come through for Naomi's family and that He had not left them without redemption. The story of Ruth and Boaz is meant to be a real example of the redemption we would experience through Jesus. The sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross, and the resurrection three days later, ensured that not a single person would be left without the opportunity for redemption. God has not left us without hope. What Jesus does is invite us all into the family of God; into His inner circle. We're not picked last, we're not forgotten, we're not left behind. Jesus wants each of us, and loves us with a passion. He has come to heal the broken, to forgive sinners, and to redeem those who have been lost. In the name of Jesus you are made new, and in His blood you are made whole. Blessed are you because the Lord has not left you without a redeemer; and that redeemer is Jesus.

What a God we have!
And how fortunate we are to have him,
this Father of our Master Jesus!
Because Jesus was raised from the dead,
we’ve been given a brand-new life and have everything to live for,
including a future in heaven—and the future starts now!
God is keeping careful watch over us and the future.
The Day is coming when you’ll have it all—life healed and whole.

1 Peter 1:3-5 (MSG)

Prayer

God help me to remember that you will never forget me or leave me behind. I don’t have to fear missing out on your blessings when I put my trust and hope in you. Help me to accept the sacrifice of your son as a means of redemption and salvation. Thank you that you are my redeemer. AMEN.
