The Lord Fights for You

I don't watch a lot of sports. Actually the only time I watch any sports on T.V is every four years when the FIFA World Cup is on T.V. I "watch" the Super Bowl every couple of years but I'm mostly there for the party and the snacks. There are lots of team sports where every person has their own individual role and responsibility. Even though there is usually one or two "stars" on each team if every part of the team wasn't functioning or playing optimally a whole game can be lost. Some players might "carry" a team, but no player, no matter how good, can play a team sport by themselves. During Formula 1 racing (another "sport" I don't watch) there is a team called the "pit crew" whose responsibility is to change the tires and do other quick tune ups/maintenances on the racecar in seconds to get the racer back on the track. This is one of those things that is pretty cool to see despite how boring I think it is to watch a car make laps around a round tack. The pit crew can make or break the race. Mere seconds can mean the difference between first and last place. Regardless of how good a player or racer might be victory is determined by the cohesiveness and effectiveness of the team. It matters who is on your team.

14 There has never been a day like it before or since,
a day when the Lord listened to a human being.
Surely the Lord was fighting for Israel!

Joshua 10:14 (NIV)

For life it matters who is on our team. Whether we like it or not life is full of obstacles, challenges, and difficulties. There are always choices to be made, problems to overcome, and battles to be fought. No one ever succeeds or overcomes in life by living truly alone. Parents, friends, co-workers, and family all play important roles in our life. Who we let on our team, who we surround ourselves with, can ultimately decide how we play. They can determine whether or not we succeed or fail. But even greater than any person we let onto our "team" is whether or not we allow God to fight for us. Since it matters who we let onto our team it matters if we let God into our lives. God will never force Himself into our lives, and He'll never force His goodness and His blessings onto us, but should we allow Him to hold influence in our lives, and should we allow Him to fight for us then we can be sure in our victory. Because no matter how difficult, or impossible the odds are, and no matter what the other team looks like victory is always guaranteed with God on our team. He is our refuge, our strength, and our assurance. Let the giants rise up, and the challenges come; there is nothing to fear because the LORD your God fights for you.

1 God is our refuge and strength,
    an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
    and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam
    and the mountains quake with their surging.
7 The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Psalm 46:1-3, 7 (NIV)

God our prayer today is that we would make you a part of our team, and let you do the fighting for us. We know that alone we can’t overcome, but that when you are on our side our victory is assured. Help us to turn to you for comfort and for refuge. We thank you that you have overcome so that we may overcome. AMEN
