The skies around Kelowna have been indecisive as of late. There are parts of the sky that are bright blue and sunny, and then you turn around to see a different part of the sky full of dark grey clouds. It seems to be indicative of spring time around here as the rains come sporadically on parts of the city while other parts are met with warm sunshine. My dad used to tell me stories of rain storms in Panama that came in an instant and left just as quickly. He tells me of a few times that he literally stood under the border of a rain cloud, standing dry and in the sun and yet by taking just a few steps forward being soaked by the tropical rain. It seems like it's not that common of an occurrence here as I've only experienced that once in my life so far. One of the little things that I really love is getting caught in a summer rain shower. I love when it's pouring rain out but the sun is shining brightly. It's fun to run and find cover to wait out the passing rain cloud. Ever since I was little I've enjoyed being under cover as the rain falls down. It feels great to be safe and protected as the rain falls down around you.

12 May you be richly rewarded
by the Lord, the God of Israel,
under whose wings you have come to take refuge.

Ruth 2:12 (NIV)

The world is chaotic and sometimes it can feel difficult to find shelter as the chaos of the world pours down around us. We're inundated with news from around the world of diseases, disaster, and war. It can be easy to feel hopeless when there's no shelter from the storms of the world. But what the Bible teaches us is that despite the chaotic world around us, despite the downpour of violence, oppression, and afflictions we can find shelter in our God. Through Jesus we find shelter from all the storms that hope to overwhelm us. Through Jesus we can find refuge from the tempests in our lives. And while I still believe that God performs miracles today and can provide us physical shelter in our most dire need, what I find most comforting is the emotional and mental shelter I find in Jesus. I know that this life isn't forever, and I know that the message of the gospel is that Jesus is going to bring about a restoration of His created world, and bring us into a new world where we never have to worry about finding shelter from the chaos around us. Even though my physical body might not find shelter from some of the evils in the world I know and believe that the same Spirit that resurrected Jesus from the grave is alive in me, and will one day restore me to my creator. In Jesus I find perfect salvation; He is my refuge and my fortress.

1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord,
“He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
3 Surely he will save you
    from the fowler’s snare
    and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

Psalm 91:1-4 (NIV)

Prayer

God no matter what is going on around me may I find peace in you. When things don’t go my way in my life, or when life seems to get a little too difficult help to turn to you. I acknowledge that you are my God and that in you I can find shelter and refuge. Help me to find comfort underneath your wings. AMEN
